Drivers in Jonesboro are being advised to prepare for heavier traffic starting Aug. 19, as Arkansas State University (ASU) begins its fall semester.
Brookland Police Captain Jason Settlemoir warned that traffic through the city could triple as students and parents unfamiliar with the area navigate local roads. He urged drivers to remain attentive and patient, especially during peak rush hours.
"Allow more time, pay attention, and if you are in a work zone or school zone, you are not allowed on your cellphone," Settlemoir said. "Make sure we are paying attention and allowing plenty of time to get to where you are going safely."
Commuters should expect increased congestion at intersections and longer waits at stoplights. Morning rush hour is anticipated to run from 7 to 8:30 a.m., with the heaviest afternoon traffic between 2:30 and 4 p.m., Settlemoir noted. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time during those windows.
Brookland Police reminded motorists to heed traffic laws, particularly in school zones, as local law enforcement will be monitoring for violations, including prohibited cell phone use while driving.
