A Paragould-based dog training business has introduced a unique sensory-friendly space to help children with autism or sensory sensitivities feel more comfortable around dogs.

Kajun K-9 Behavior & Obedience recently unveiled Tommy’s Room, a designated quiet area located inside The Dog House in Paragould. The space is named after Tommy, a standard poodle owned by the Headley family, who was trained as an autism assistance dog for their son, James.

The idea was inspired by the personal experiences of Macie Headley, the lead trainer and founder of Kajun K-9 Behavior & Obedience. Headley explained that her family initially struggled to afford the high cost of obtaining a trained autism assistance dog. Determined to provide such a companion for her son, she decided to learn how to train one herself.

“It all started with our son James, a standard poodle named Tommy, and a price tag we simply couldn’t afford,” Headley said. “When we realized an autism assistance dog was financially out of reach for our family, I made the decision to learn how to train one myself. Tommy changed James’ life in ways we never imagined, and that experience became my calling.”

Today, Headley trains autism assistance dogs for other families and works to create opportunities for children and families to safely interact with dogs through positive experiences and education. Tommy’s Room furthers that mission by offering a low-stimulation environment where such interactions can take place without the distractions or unpredictability of busy, public spaces.

Families can reserve Tommy’s Room by the hour for various needs, including introducing children to new dogs, preparing for the arrival of a future service dog, or simply helping children build confidence around animals. While the space was designed with the autism community in mind, it is open to all families who may benefit from the calm, controlled setting.

“Our goal is to help create successful first experiences,” Headley said. “Whether that’s meeting a new puppy, preparing for a future service dog, or simply building confidence around animals, we want families to have a safe place where those moments can happen without pressure.”
