North Arkansas Electric Cooperative has joined utilities across the country in signing a pledge designed to prevent new data centers from driving up electricity costs for consumers.
The national commitment, originating from policies under the former administration's Ratepayer Protection Plan, requires service providers to ensure that data centers cover all costs associated with their energy use. This includes building, purchasing, or sourcing the necessary electricity and infrastructure required for both constructing and operating data centers, without burdening existing ratepayers.
North Arkansas Electric Cooperative CEO Mel Coleman confirmed that no data center projects are currently planned within the cooperative's service area. Still, Coleman emphasized the importance of proactive measures to safeguard local consumers from unforeseen costs in the future.
