PARAGOULD, Ark. – A local woman has launched a community garden in Paragould to help families access free fresh fruits and vegetables during a time of rising food prices.
Summer Neal, CEO of the Paragould Community Garden, said the idea took root while she was working in her backyard garden earlier this year. Now located at 901 Lake Street, the garden offers produce to anyone in need and is fueled by community involvement.
"Right now, I think what we need the most for the garden to continue thriving for the rest of the season is just volunteers," Neal said. "If we can just get some help out here — 'cause right now it’s just me and her — and for us it’s really hard to get out here every single day."
Neal described the importance of sharing the garden’s harvest, emphasizing the value of providing fresh, healthy produce to the community.
"It means a whole lot to be able to take someone some tomatoes — to be able to give them and say, ‘Hey, these aren’t diseased. These don’t have bacteria on them. These are fresh,’” Neal said.
