Eddie Vedder, frontman of Pearl Jam, delivered a heartfelt performance on Tuesday during the funeral for Irish singer-songwriter Glen Hansard. The service was held at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Vedder performed “Song of Good Hope,” a track from Hansard’s 2012 debut solo album, *Rhythm and Repose*. Joining him for the performance was Markéta Irglová, Hansard’s collaborator in the band The Swell Season and his co-star in the acclaimed 2007 film *Once*.
Hansard, a beloved figure in the world of music and film, shared a long professional and personal relationship with Vedder. Hansard toured with Vedder’s solo band, The Earthlings, opened for Pearl Jam on multiple occasions, and co-wrote “My Father’s Daughter,” the debut track for Vedder’s daughter, Olivia Vedder.
The funeral also included remarks from U2’s Bono. During his tribute, Bono reflected on Hansard’s remarkable ability to make everyone feel as though they were his closest friend. He then played a voice message from artist Patti Smith, in which she sang a lullaby dedicated to Hansard’s family and friends. Bono continued by reciting lyrics from U2’s “Beautiful Day,” before being joined by bandmate The Edge, encouraging the gathered mourners to sing along to parts of the song.
Hansard passed away on July 29 in a motorcycle accident at the age of 56. His death marked the loss of a musician and storyteller whose work resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.
