JONESBORO, Ark. — More than 22,000 pets across the United States found homes during the recent Bissell Pet Foundation's “Empty the Shelters” event, a nationwide initiative aimed at reducing shelter crowding and promoting pet adoption.
Locally, the Northeast Arkansas Humane Society (NEAHS) participated in the campaign, which concluded on Aug. 2. Adoption fees for cats were reduced to $35, while dogs could be adopted for $70. These fees included vaccinations, spay or neuter surgery, and a microchip. Standard adoption rates at NEAHS are typically $60 for adult cats, $85 for kittens, $160 for adult dogs, and $200 for puppies.
Lisa Trevathan of NEAHS explained that the Bissell Pet Foundation helps cover the difference in costs, enabling shelters to lower their fees. “We’re excited because we get to drop the adoption fee we normally have to charge, but Bissell covers the extra costs. So it helps get more animals out of the shelter. It’s a great thing,” Trevathan said.
The event comes during a challenging time of year for shelters, with rising numbers of surrenders and stray animals coinciding with staffing shortages and seasonal weather emergencies, according to Bissell Pet Foundation founder Cathy Bissell. The foundation reported that 9,383 dogs and 13,234 cats were adopted nationwide during the campaign.
“Every adoption that happens through 'Empty the Shelters' is real relief for a shelter and a fresh start for a pet,” Bissell said. “The need doesn’t stop when the event is over, and we hope people will keep encouraging friends and family to choose adoption.”
Trevathan added that the initiative creates space at the shelter for additional animals. “If we empty the shelter, then we get to bring another one in. You save two lives: the one you take home, and the one we get to bring in,” she said.
