The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) is offering free chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing to hunters across the state during hunting season. Officials encourage hunters to report sick deer and submit samples for testing through various services.

AJ Riggs, the AGFC’s wildlife health biologist, emphasized that the appearance of illness alone cannot confirm CWD in a deer. While symptoms such as weight loss, excessive salivation, increased drinking or urination, and loss of fear of humans may indicate the disease in its later stages, these signs can also result from other conditions. Riggs stressed that only USDA-approved tests can confirm CWD.

CWD, a fatal neurological disease that affects deer, elk, and other cervids, can spread through bodily waste or physical contact between animals. A deer may harbor the disease for over a year before showing symptoms, making early detection critical.

Hunters and community members who spot a potentially sick deer are urged to contact the AGFC. Visual evidence, such as photos or videos of the deer, can assist in the agency’s evaluation.

Testing samples from harvested deer is straightforward. The AGFC offers drop-off locations statewide as well as participation from select taxidermists. Additionally, regional AGFC offices provide sampling services, though hunters should call ahead to confirm availability. The commission also assists in disposing of animals that test positive for CWD.

Riggs advised hunters to avoid consuming meat from animals that test positive for CWD or exhibit signs of illness. This guidance aligns with recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Arkansas Department of Health.
