Single parents in Lawrence County have until Sept. 1 to apply for scholarships ranging from $400 to $1,600 through the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF). The application period opened Aug. 1, and eligible parents can submit their applications online at aspsf.org/scholarships.
The scholarships are aimed at parents pursuing associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, professional certificates, or skilled-trade programs. In Lawrence County, two scholarships totaling $3,200 have already been awarded this year. Recipients Hannah Carter, a nursing student at Black River Technical College, and Drusyla Wilson, a nursing major attending the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, shared how the funding has benefited their families.
“This scholarship has allowed me to demonstrate to my children just how important school can be,” Wilson said. “They enjoy studying alongside me and trying to learn the same material as me. Finishing this program and attaining my license will allow me to provide for them without so much assistance from my family.”
Carter also noted that the scholarship has helped her manage necessities for her children, childcare costs, and travel expenses related to school and clinical requirements.
The ASPSF combines flexible scholarship funding with resources such as mentorship, career guidance, workshops, and local support connections that single parents can rely on throughout their education. By helping parents succeed in their educational goals, the nonprofit seeks to strengthen families and expand local workforce opportunities.
"All parents deserve the opportunity to build a better future through education,” said Jenn Morehead, CEO of ASPSF. “When we remove barriers to earning a degree or workforce credential, families, employers, and communities all benefit.”
To qualify, applicants must meet several criteria: they must be single parents, live in an eligible county (including Lawrence County), hold a high school diploma or GED, and be enrolled in at least one three-credit-hour course. Applicants must also maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, meet income eligibility guidelines, and satisfy other program requirements. Both first-time and returning applicants are encouraged to apply.
Since 1990, ASPSF has awarded over $50 million in scholarships statewide, offering single parents not only financial support but also tools to break the cycle of poverty and secure higher-earning careers.
