JONESBORO, Ark. — The Jonesboro City Council unanimously approved new restrictions on overnight camping in city-owned parks and parking lots during a vote on Thursday, Nov. 5. The ordinance, which passed 10-0, limits camping to designated areas. Violators may face a minimum fine of $100 and be subject to removal by police or code enforcement officers.

The ordinance defines camping as setting up tents, shelters, or laying out bedding in a way that appears to be intended for an overnight stay. However, the city may issue special permissions allowing camping in restricted areas during designated events. City Attorney Carol Duncan noted during a September Public Services Council Committee meeting that the rules will apply to recreational vehicle (RV) camping as well.

The measure, which adds Section 50-27 to the city’s code, emphasizes public safety and cleanliness as key reasons for the restriction. It also states that unauthorized camping can interfere with public enjoyment of shared spaces. Councilmember Chris Gibson introduced the motion, seconded by Chris Moore. Supporting votes came from Janice Porter, Brian Emison, Charles Coleman, Ann Williams, Kevin Miller, L.J. Bryant, Joe Hafner, and David McClain.

Camping opportunities remain available at Craighead Forest Park Campground, which features year-round access. The site includes five lakeside tent areas, a designated primitive camping zone, and 36 RV spots, according to city information.

The new rules aim to balance access to public spaces with the need for safety and maintenance.
