The Izard County Cougars are set to host the Magazine Rattlers on Friday night in a highly anticipated matchup for the 8-man West Conference championship. The game, taking place at Cougar Stadium, features two teams that have dominated their competition throughout the season.

Izard County enters the game with an 8-1 overall record and a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play. Magazine, meanwhile, remains undefeated at 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Both teams have already clinched spots in the Arkansas 8-man State Playoffs, with Izard County securing a first-round bye under the rotation system that gives the West Conference two byes this year.

Cougars head coach Carr Hill spoke about the game and his team's preparation. He emphasized the importance of focusing on their own abilities rather than their opponent. "Every week, we prepare as if the opposing team is faceless," Hill remarked, adding that the Cougars' focus is entirely on what they can control.

Hill also offered a unique metaphor he uses with his team, describing how maturity and responsibility change reactions to adversity. Reflecting on a personal experience, he explained that as a young man, he might have run from a bear in the woods, but as an adult with a family, he would face the bear to protect his loved ones. He likened this mindset to his players’ commitment to playing for one another on the field. Hill credited that bond as a significant factor in the Cougars’ dramatic overtime victory last week, when they came from behind to beat Southside Bee Branch.

Despite preseason goals to reach the playoffs, Hill expressed surprise at the team's performance this year, noting how the season has exceeded expectations. Win or lose, Hill said he remains proud of the progress they’ve achieved.

As for the keys to defeating Magazine, Hill acknowledged that the Rattlers are a tough opponent but emphasized staying disciplined and executing their game plan. Magazine has been dominant this season and enters the matchup as one of the top teams in Arkansas’ 8-man football classification.

Kickoff for the 8-man West Conference title game is scheduled for Friday night at Cougar Stadium.
