JONESBORO, Ark. — The Jonesboro City Council has approved a new ordinance aimed at curbing unauthorized camping in city parks and parking lots.

Ordinance 26-038, passed during the council’s meeting on Thursday, Nov. 5, prohibits individuals from camping in public areas that are not designated for such use. Under the ordinance, camping is defined as erecting a tent or shelter, or using sleeping bags or other bedding materials, with the intent to stay overnight.

City officials said the measure is intended to maintain safety and cleanliness in public spaces.

Law enforcement and code enforcement officers are authorized to remove individuals and their belongings from unauthorized camping areas. Violators may also face fines for noncompliance.

Designated camping areas within the city are the only exceptions to the ban.

The ordinance reflects ongoing efforts by Jonesboro leaders to balance public access to parks and parking areas with the need to address safety and sanitary concerns.

This legal development underscores Jonesboro’s commitment to keeping its public spaces orderly and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.
