The Yellville-Summit Panthers conclude their 2026 football season tonight with a much-anticipated rivalry game against the Marshall Bobcats in the “Battle of the Buffalo.” Named after the Buffalo National River that flows between the two communities, the annual contest traditionally symbolizes regional pride and local bragging rights.

The rivalry dates back many years, though it was briefly interrupted when Marshall transitioned to Arkansas’ 8-man football division for three seasons. Marshall has since returned to 11-man football, competing in the 3A-2 conference, which has allowed the rivalry to officially resume this year.

In recent history, Yellville-Summit dominated the series, claiming the traveling trophy for five consecutive seasons through 2018. However, this year's matchup brings a fresh sense of unpredictability as the Panthers, led by head coach Chaseton McCarthy, look to finish a challenging season on a positive note.

McCarthy emphasized the significance of the rivalry, noting that season records carry little weight when the trophy is on the line. “This game is about more than just wins and losses,” McCarthy said in comments shared with KTLO, Classic Hits, and The Boot Sports.

The Panthers have faced their share of struggles this season, but McCarthy expressed optimism about the team’s potential heading into the future. He also acknowledged the challenges of facing a winless Marshall team, stressing the importance of preparation and focus.

“It doesn’t matter what the other side’s record is,” McCarthy explained. “In games like this, anything can happen.”

The community will also celebrate Senior Night, honoring the contributions of Yellville-Summit’s graduating players. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Yellville-Summit High School.

The “Battle of the Buffalo” trophy carries a storied history and remains coveted by both schools. Fans from both communities are expected to gather in large numbers, lending enthusiastic support to their teams as the rivalry enters a new chapter.
