BATESVILLE, Ark. — Renowned football coach Charlie Strong will return to Batesville High School on Friday, Nov. 6, to be honored as a Hometown Hero during Senior Night at Pioneer Stadium. The celebration takes place as the Batesville Pioneers face off against Valley View High School, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
Strong, a 1978 graduate of Batesville High School, began his standout football career with the Pioneers before playing at the University of Central Arkansas. His coaching path has spanned decades, including stints in both collegiate and professional football. Strong served as head coach at the University of Louisville, the University of Texas, and the University of South Florida. At Louisville, he led the Cardinals to two Big East titles and a Sugar Bowl victory. His career also includes two national championships as an assistant coach at the University of Florida, roles at institutions such as South Carolina, Alabama, and Miami, and work with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL.
“Coach Strong’s career is something our entire community can be proud of,” said Batesville Athletic Director Stu Smith. “He started his football journey right here as a Pioneer and went on to coach at some of the highest levels of the game. We’re excited to welcome him back and recognize everything he has accomplished.”
Friday’s celebration will begin with a public meet-and-greet from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Batesville High School Performing Arts Center cafeteria, located at 1 Pioneer Drive. Community members are encouraged to attend the free event, which will include complimentary food and drinks. At 6 p.m., Mayor Rick Elumbaugh will formally introduce Strong.
Pre-game activities at Pioneer Stadium will feature a special midfield recognition of Strong and his family, during which Strong will serve as an honorary Pioneer captain and participate in the pregame coin toss.
“Coach Strong is a great example of the opportunities that can begin right here in Batesville,” said Superintendent David Campbell. “We’re proud of his accomplishments and grateful for the opportunity to welcome him home and celebrate his connection to Pioneer Nation.”
The Senior Night festivities will also recognize senior football players, band members, and golfers for their contributions to Batesville High School’s athletics and activities.
Community members are encouraged to attend this special evening and show their support for both the senior students and a hometown legend.
