BATESVILLE, Ark. — A fire in downtown Batesville on Halloween night caused extensive damage to The Studio Salon and affected several nearby businesses, forcing temporary closures due to smoke damage.
The blaze was reported shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday on Lower Main Street, between the Melba Theater and Oliver’s Card House. The Batesville Fire Department responded swiftly, with assistance from volunteer firefighters. According to Main Street Batesville, city firefighters arrived within three minutes of the initial call.
The Studio Salon sustained the most severe damage. In a statement, the business announced it would remain closed as owners assess the situation and plan restoration efforts.
Nearby businesses also felt the effects of the fire. Wheeler’s Boot and Shoe Repair suffered smoke damage, but owner James Wheeler said he expects to reopen within a week. The Melba Theater reported considerable smoke damage, prompting closures on Sunday, Nov. 1, and Tuesday, Nov. 3, for cleaning, ventilation, and safety inspections.
Oliver’s Card House reported mild smoke damage but said the full extent of the impact remains under assessment. The business anticipated staying closed for several days during the cleaning process. The Adler Lofts building also experienced smoke damage, and tenants were evacuated during the emergency.
The fire occurred as Halloween festivities organized by Main Street Batesville were winding down. Thousands of families had gathered downtown for trick-or-treating and events. Although rain later dispersed many attendees, patrons were still inside the Melba Theater and Oliver’s Card House when the fire began.
Main Street Batesville expressed gratitude to firefighters, police officers, and others who responded to the incident. In a statement, the organization highlighted the critical role of downtown businesses in the community’s fabric, emphasizing their importance as more than just storefronts but vital parts of Batesville’s identity.
The Studio Salon also thanked emergency personnel and the community for their assistance, pledging to provide updates as restoration plans progress.
Batesville Fire Chief Mark McCollum confirmed the fire remains under investigation. An official cause has not yet been determined.
No injuries were reported.
