A vehicle lodged in the riverbed of the Black River near the Elgin access point remains submerged following an unsuccessful recovery attempt on Monday, according to the Independence County Dive Team.
Jackson County authorities initially called the dive team at 11:45 a.m. on Monday to assist with what was believed to be a recently submerged vehicle. However, upon further investigation, officials determined the vehicle had been underwater for a significant amount of time, the dive team said in a statement shared on social media.
Divers assessed the situation and confirmed that the vehicle was unoccupied. They then prepared the submerged vehicle for removal with assistance from a local wrecker service. Despite their efforts, the vehicle could not be pulled from the riverbed and remains underwater.
The Independence County Dive Team said it will coordinate with Jackson County officials if further recovery efforts are deemed necessary.
