Residents in Mountain Home have until Sunday, Nov. 8, to remove yard signs related to Tuesday’s general election unless the candidate advances to a runoff. The deadline is outlined in City Ordinance No. 2025-26, according to City Clerk Scott Liles.

The ordinance allows political yard signs to be displayed up to 60 days prior to an election and mandates their removal within five days afterward. Signs supporting candidates who progress to the Dec. 1 runoff may remain in place until that election but must be taken down by Dec. 6. Ignoring the deadline may result in a $25 fine for each day a sign remains displayed.

The ordinance places responsibility for removal on the homeowner rather than the candidate. “When we updated the ordinance last year, the idea was that the homeowner had the final say on what was or wasn’t on display in his or her yard, not the candidate themselves,” Liles explained. He noted this approach is more practical, as enforcement aimed at candidates could lead to complications in cases involving state or national campaigns.

Liles added that violations of the ordinance are rare. “Signs lingering past the deadline typically aren’t a significant issue. Most cases can be resolved with a simple knock on the door or a call to the candidate,” he said.

Candidates often retrieve their signs for future use. “As a candidate myself, I know how expensive those signs can be to produce. Most candidates track where their signs are and collect them after the election, not only to comply with the ordinance but also to save on costs for future campaigns,” Liles explained.
