Sharp County Sheriff Shane Russell is advising families to take extra precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for children trick-or-treating door to door.

Among Sheriff Russell's recommendations is the use of reflective tape on costumes to improve visibility for children walking after dark. Parents are also encouraged to provide their children with flashlights to help them see and be seen at night.

To further promote safety, Sheriff Russell emphasized the importance of inspecting all candy collected during trick-or-treating. "If a wrapper or package appears to have been tampered with or opened, it’s best to discard the item," he advised.

The sheriff also urged drivers to remain vigilant and watch carefully for young children, who may be excitedly running from house to house. "Most importantly, look out for the little ones," he cautioned. "They’re focused on getting treats and may not be paying attention to traffic or safety."

By following these simple steps, families can help ensure a safe and festive evening for everyone involved.
