The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) has announced three women-only beginner deer hunting camps under its Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program. Designed to teach hunting basics, the overnight camps aim to help participants gain the confidence and skills necessary to hunt independently.
“These deer camps are for women who have never hunted as adults,” said Lea White, BOW coordinator for the AGFC. “Whether you’ve never hunted before or only joined family trips as a child without learning the full process, these camps are a great starting point. For the December hunt, we’ve also reserved a few spaces for mobility-impaired women.”
The camps begin with lessons on firearm safety and shooting techniques using rifles and ammunition provided by the AGFC. Participants will receive instruction on handling firearms, understanding shot placement, and learning about deer habitat and management. Once prepared, each participant will have two mentored hunting opportunities over the weekend.
“These are hands-on camps,” White added. “After the hunts, we teach participants how to field-dress, skin, and process deer to maximize their experience. By the end of the weekend, we want attendees to leave with the skills and knowledge they need to hunt on their own, and even inspire others to take up deer hunting.”
The cost to attend a camp is $75, covering meals, and payment is due only after applicants are selected. To apply, participants must complete an online form for the specific camp. Details for the three camps include:
- **Dec. 11-13, C.A. Vines 4-H Center, Little Rock:** This camp includes reserved spots for mobility-impaired women who require aids such as wheelchairs, braces, or crutches. - **Jan. 1-3, Clinton:** This camp offers additional hunting opportunities in a central Arkansas setting. - **Feb. 19-21, Pine Bluff:** This late-season camp focuses on crossbow hunting. Applications for this session will open in late December.
