Congressman Rick Crawford visited Arkansas State University–Mountain Home (ASUMH) on Friday, where he discussed the significant challenges facing the agricultural industry in Arkansas. Coming from eastern Arkansas and representing the state's 1st Congressional District, Crawford addressed issues impacting farmers both statewide and in the Twin Lakes area.
Crawford pointed to a combination of factors, including rising interest rates, persistent inflation, unpredictable weather conditions, and volatile market prices, as key pressures currently affecting farmers. He warned that these conditions have led to an increase in farmer bankruptcies and said the trend would likely continue without intervention.
“The current farming policies are based on a model that is over 100 years old,” Crawford said, referring to outdated federal programs governing agriculture. He emphasized the need for a shift toward policy frameworks that are designed to meet the demands of the 21st-century economy.
Crawford’s remarks come at a time when Arkansas agriculture—a critical component of the state’s economy—faces mounting financial strain. The congressman expressed hope that by addressing these issues at the federal level, the government can provide meaningful support to farmers and ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
