A 48-year-old Batesville man was arrested Friday morning following a high-speed pursuit through city streets, ultimately ending outside the White River Medical Center’s emergency room, authorities said.

Christopher Ray Day faces charges of fleeing by vehicle, a Class D felony, along with misdemeanor counts of speeding and reckless driving, according to an affidavit from the Independence County Sheriff’s Office. Because of prior convictions, Day is being charged as a habitual offender under Arkansas law, the document states.

The incident began around 3:55 a.m. when Deputy Tyler Toland reportedly encountered Day’s vehicle near the intersection of McHue Road and Highway 167. Toland ran the vehicle’s license plate and discovered its registration had expired. When Toland activated his emergency lights, Day allegedly moved into oncoming traffic and failed to maintain his lane before continuing north toward Batesville without stopping, the affidavit said.

As the pursuit unfolded, Deputy Jacob Birkhead tried to position his patrol vehicle in front of Day’s car to slow it down, but Day did not yield and narrowly avoided a collision, according to the report. Speeds reached 70 mph as the chase proceeded over Ramsey Mountain and into Batesville.

The Batesville Police Department attempted to stop the vehicle using a tire deflation device deployed on Highway 167. However, the affidavit states the device was unsuccessful. Day’s vehicle then turned into residential areas, running multiple stop signs on streets including Myers Street, Chaney Drive, 14th Street, Grays Avenue, and Sidney Street.

The pursuit concluded when Day drove into the parking lot of White River Medical Center and stopped near the emergency room entrance. Batesville Police Corporal Darrin Brewer reportedly blocked Day’s vehicle and deputies ordered him to exit the car. Day complied and was taken into custody without further incident, the affidavit said.

Day told deputies he had been having trouble with his pacemaker and was driving to the hospital. Medical staff evaluated him and found no injuries or medical concerns. He was later booked into the Independence County Jail with bond set at $20,000. Court records show Day’s first appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.

No injuries to law enforcement or others were reported during the incident.
