PARAGOULD, Ark. — With daylight saving time ending Sunday and clocks rolling back one hour, evening darkness will arrive earlier—raising safety concerns for those who walk or run outdoors in the evenings.

Paragould Police Captain Jason Elms shared tips for staying safe during this seasonal shift, emphasizing the importance of situational awareness.

"Sometimes you have to be a defensive driver to protect yourself," Elms explained. "Well, it kind of comes into the same concept when you’re out walking in public—you have to pay attention to your surroundings and the things around you."

Elms advised walking or running against the flow of traffic to ensure better visibility of approaching vehicles. He also recommended choosing pedestrian trails where motor vehicles are prohibited, when possible.

For those who listen to headphones during their evening outings, Elms suggested keeping the volume low to stay alert and aware of passing cars, bikes, or other people.

These precautions aim to enhance safety for pedestrians as the early nightfall of the season begins.

For residents wishing to avoid high-traffic areas, local trails and pedestrian pathways can provide additional options for exercising.

Daylight saving time officially ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, offering an extra hour of sleep but also signaling darker evenings across the state.
