The City of Jonesboro has been awarded $1,036,550 in federal funds to advance flood mitigation efforts along Lost Creek, a critical step in addressing flooding challenges in the community.
The grant comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program and will be used for detailed engineering and design plans to improve approximately 4.27 miles of the creek’s channel. The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management will contribute $324,000 in non-federal matching funds, bringing the project’s total approved cost to $1,360,550. An additional $64,550 for subrecipient management costs is fully funded by the federal government.
Proposed upgrades to Lost Creek include widening the channel’s bottom, creating more gradual side slopes, and incorporating a tiered bank shelf. Plans also call for a maintenance road that will double as a walking trail to enhance public access and recreation opportunities.
“This is an important step toward addressing longstanding flooding challenges in our community,” Mayor Harold Copenhaver said in a statement. “Improving Lost Creek will help protect residents and property while creating opportunities for future growth and development in North and West Jonesboro.”
U.S. Representative Rick Crawford emphasized the importance of the grant for the city’s resilience. “Effective flood mitigation requires proactive solutions. This investment in the Lost Creek project lays the foundation to protect local homes, support businesses, and ensure Jonesboro’s economic growth,” he said.
In addition to this grant, Jonesboro received $1 million in fiscal year 2025 to support property acquisitions necessary for stormwater retention and future improvements. The city plans to use these resources to position itself for further federal funding through programs such as the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA).
“Addressing flooding is expensive, but necessary as we continue to see increased demand for housing and recreation,” said Chief Operations Officer Tony Thomas. “Investments in critical infrastructure and public safety are essential to building a stronger future for generations to come.”
The improvements to Lost Creek are expected to aid local flood control efforts while supporting economic development and housing needs for the growing Jonesboro community. City officials credited federal representatives, including Senator John Boozman and Senator Tom Cotton, for their efforts in securing the funding.
