JONESBORO, Ark. — A Jonesboro man is facing multiple charges after allegedly attempting to strike two people with a vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The incident occurred on Oct. 26 near Dudley Street and East Nettleton Avenue. Police responded to a report of a person trying to run over others with a vehicle, which later caught fire.
A woman told police she had returned a vehicle to the home of her former fiancé, identified as Anthony D. Jackson, and was walking away with a friend when Jackson got behind the wheel and drove toward them on a sidewalk, the affidavit states.
After the initial attempt, the pair walked toward the friend’s vehicle. Investigators allege Jackson turned the car around and accelerated toward them again, then tried to hit the friend’s vehicle as it was leaving. Jackson missed and crashed into a concrete embankment, officers reported.
A passing driver who spoke with officers corroborated the woman’s account, stating Jackson had turned around and attempted to strike the second vehicle, according to the affidavit.
Jackson stayed at the scene but allegedly gave inconsistent statements to police that did not match other witness accounts, the affidavit states. He was taken into custody on assault allegations.
Because Jackson is on felony probation, officers performed a probation search of his residence and reported finding drug paraphernalia in bedside drawers. Police listed the items as bongs and grinders with marijuana residue, two pipes, and a white straw containing a powdery substance, according to the affidavit.
Jackson was taken to St. Bernards Medical Center for clearance before being booked into the Craighead County Detention Center.
First appearance paperwork lists several charges against Jackson: aggravated assault on a family or household member and aggravated assault, both Class D felonies, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia and possessing instruments of crime, both Class A misdemeanors.
Judge David Boling found probable cause to proceed with the case during a hearing on Oct. 28. Bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety, and Jackson was ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor as a condition of release. A court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 16.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
