A Jonesboro man is in custody after authorities allege he attempted to run over two people with a car on Oct. 26, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Anthony Dewayne Jackson, 27, was charged Wednesday by District Judge David Boling with aggravated assault, first-degree criminal mischief, possession of drug paraphernalia, and violating probation. Police say the incident unfolded near the intersection of Dudley Street and East Nettleton Avenue.

Officers arrived on the scene in response to reports of a person attempting to strike others with a car that subsequently caught fire, according to the affidavit. One victim told police she had been dropping off a vehicle at the home of her ex-fiancé when Jackson allegedly entered the car and tried to hit her and a friend as they walked away on the sidewalk.

After missing the two, Jackson reportedly accelerated again in a second attempt, this time aiming for another car belonging to one of the victims. Instead, he collided with a concrete embankment, police said.

A witness at the scene corroborated the victims’ account. When questioned by law enforcement, Jackson allegedly provided conflicting stories about the events.

Because he was already on felony probation, police searched Jackson's home following the incident. There, they reported finding drug paraphernalia, including multiple bongs and grinders containing marijuana residue.

Jackson was taken to St. Bernards Medical Center for medical clearance before being booked into the Craighead County Detention Center. Judge Boling set his bond at $50,000 cash or surety. Should Jackson post bond, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor until his court appearance, scheduled for Dec. 16.

Police continue to investigate the case.
