A Jonesboro man has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to assaulting another man with a beer bottle, leaving the victim with serious injuries.

Guy Anthony Moreno, 31, entered a negotiated guilty plea on Monday to one count of second-degree battery, a Class D felony, according to court records. Second Judicial Circuit Judge Scott Ellington handed down the sentence of 36 months to be served in the Arkansas Division of Correction. Moreno will receive 29 days of jail time credit and serve an additional 36 months with a suspended imposition of sentence.

The court also ordered Moreno to pay all court costs, fees, and fines in monthly $50 installments following his release. A separate fleeing charge against Moreno was dismissed as part of the case.

The charges stemmed from an incident on Sept. 27, when officers were called to the 2500 block of Viking Street in Jonesboro for an in-progress domestic disturbance, according to a probable cause affidavit. Upon arrival, officers found the victim lying on the ground with a severe head injury and bleeding heavily. Witnesses told police that Moreno had attacked the victim unprovoked before fleeing the scene.

After a brief foot chase, officers apprehended Moreno nearby. Witness statements and the affidavit indicated that Moreno struck the victim twice with a beer bottle during the attack. The second blow shattered the bottle, causing the victim to collapse. Moreno then reportedly proceeded to stomp on the victim’s head and abdomen and punched him multiple times in the face.

The victim sustained several injuries, including fractures to his eye socket and nasal structure, according to the affidavit.

Court documents show Moreno was also ordered to pay restitution and comply with all terms of the suspended sentence upon release.
