Jonesboro, Ark. — The future of Jonesboro is taking shape as city officials unveiled new plans to guide growth and infrastructure development over the next two decades.

The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission reviewed a first draft of the Comprehensive Growth Plan and Master Street Plan during its Tuesday evening meeting. These plans were presented by Matt Lambert, a consultant from DPZ Co-Design, which the city retained to assist in designing the long-term strategy.

The proposed Comprehensive Growth Plan emphasizes developing community hubs and improving connectivity within Jonesboro. It outlines steps to expand pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, create more urban green spaces, and enhance access to parks. These proposals reflect public input gathered during a community survey that guided the plan's creation.

In addition to the growth-focused strategies, city officials are fostering partnerships to address pressing infrastructure concerns. Earlier on Tuesday, the Finance and Administration Council Committee approved a resolution for an agreement with Arkansas State University (ASU). This collaboration would leverage university scientists’ expertise to develop more resilient stormwater ponds and drainage systems.

According to the resolution, some areas in Jonesboro experience groundwater depletion of over one foot annually. The proposed ponds could mitigate this issue while addressing yard waste by transforming branches and leaves into mulch for pond beds.
