JONESBORO, Ark. – Ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, Arkansas State University professor Dr. Cameron Wimpy is emphasizing the importance of voter preparation in understanding both local and statewide ballot items. Speaking about the races and initiatives impacting Craighead County, Wimpy outlined what voters can expect in the booth.

Among the local decisions, Craighead County voters will face elections for Circuit Judge District 2 and other local offices, including some candidates running unopposed. Additionally, ballot measures addressing county and city-specific issues, such as tax-related proposals in Jonesboro and a possible consolidation of the county's treasurer and collector offices, will be up for vote.

At the state and federal levels, races for governor, U.S. Senate, and other statewide offices are expected to draw significant voter interest. "Statewide Senate race — that’s moderately competitive compared to previous years," Wimpy noted. Arkansas voters will also consider four ballot measures, including three constitutional amendments referred by the state legislature and one citizen-initiated proposal.

Wimpy highlighted the critical role of state officials in shaping local policy. “They passed statewide laws and so those races are also very, very important, and they’re representing us ideally on issues that apply to our states,” he said.

Acknowledging common barriers to voter participation, Wimpy pointed to a lack of knowledge about the ballot and election technology. Still, he praised Arkansas' voting system, which combines paper ballots with scanners for tallying. “In many ways, it’s the best of all worlds with technology and paper,” Wimpy said.

Wimpy encouraged voters to use available resources to research candidates, issues, and ballot measures before heading to the polls. More election information can be found through the Arkansas Secretary of State at sos.arkansas.gov.

The midterm elections will take place on Nov. 8.
