Mild weather is currently in the forecast, but with November approaching, colder temperatures are not far behind. Cherokee Village Fire Chief Kal Dienst is urging residents to use this time to prepare their heating systems and ensure their homes are ready for colder days.
For households that rely on wood heat, Chief Dienst recommends hiring a professional to inspect heating systems and clean chimneys. Professionals can visually inspect heat exchangers, tighten connections, and test for carbon monoxide or other leaks. They can also check for signs of corrosion or fraying and replace air filters. Proper maintenance is critical to reducing the risk of equipment failure or house fires during the winter months.
Chief Dienst also emphasized the importance of checking smoke alarms and fire detectors as daylight saving time ends this weekend. This transition, which takes place at 2 a.m. Sunday, offers an ideal opportunity to ensure these devices are working properly and have fresh batteries.
"This regular maintenance will greatly reduce the risk of a home fire and ensures your equipment works when it matters most," Chief Dienst stated.
As Arkansans prepare for the colder season, homeowners are encouraged to take these steps to protect their families and property from potential hazards.
