Craighead County is seeing a notable increase in voter turnout during early voting this election cycle, including a surge in participation from young voters.

More than 59,000 voters are registered in the county this year, 1,500 more than in 2024, according to data released by the county. This growth has contributed to a significant uptick at the polls. County officials report that more than 7,000 voters cast their ballots early last week, an increase of 1,300 compared to the previous midterm election cycle in 2022.

Across the board, young voters appear to be a key demographic driving this early participation, with some pointing to heightened political awareness and local issues as motivating factors. Carson Campbell, an Arkansas State University student and first-time voter, shared that he was prompted to vote early almost on a whim but emphasized the importance of participating.

"And I was like, 'I’m bored, up at the school,'" Campbell explained. "I was like, 'I’m just going to go vote.'"

Craighead County Clerk Mary Dawn Marshall highlighted that this year’s ballot offers a wide variety of choices, which she believes has contributed to increased interest among residents.

"There’s a lot of local races on this ballot, as well as state and federal," Marshall said. "So, there’s more on the ballot, which covers more people that makes them more interested in the outcome."

Campaigns and advertisements may also be a factor, according to Campbell. He said many young voters, himself included, are not only heading to the polls but are taking the time to research candidates and learn about the issues before voting.

"I think we see a lot of problems in today’s society and economy that we want to fix," Campbell said. "And we have a say in that, so we’re going out and voting."

Jonesboro resident David Russell echoed these sentiments, attributing the turnout to a combination of political engagement and the region’s population growth.

"I, personally, am more politically motivated as of right now," Russell said. "But I also know that Jonesboro is rapidly expanding, and we are rapidly gaining more and more Jonesboro residents. So, it’s always going to be a mixture."

Meanwhile, absentee voters in Craighead County should be mindful of upcoming deadlines. The last day to mail, fax, or email absentee ballots is Monday, while the final deadline for in-person delivery of these ballots is set for October 30.

With a larger population and increased interest in the elections, Craighead County officials anticipate voter engagement will remain strong as Election Day approaches.
