Residents of Cotter and Gassville may notice smoke rising from plumbing vents or the ground this week as the local sewer line crew conducts smoke testing to check for leaks. The testing will occur Monday through Thursday, October 26–29, weather permitting, according to Gassville Mayor Jeff Braim.

The crew will introduce smoke into the sewer system to identify cracked pipes, faulty connections, or other issues that allow rainwater or groundwater to infiltrate the lines. Smoke escaping through plumbing vents on homes or from the ground is a normal part of the test and should not cause concern. However, smoke appearing inside a home could indicate a problem. Homeowners who observe smoke indoors should contact their city officials immediately.

Gassville residents needing assistance can either call Gassville City Hall at 870-435-6439, extension 2, or reach the sewer line crew at 870-421-7260. Cotter residents can contact Cotter City Hall at 870-435-6326 or use the same number to contact the crew directly.

The purpose of the smoke test is to improve the integrity of the sewer system by identifying issues that might otherwise go unnoticed. Officials encourage residents to remain vigilant and report any concerns promptly during the testing period.
