The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP) has added ten Arkansas properties, including a landmark in Izard County, to the National Register of Historic Places during September and October.

Among the newly recognized sites is the Izard County First Court House Marker, located in Melbourne. Erected in 1937 as part of Arkansas’ centennial celebration, the marker is one of several installed by the Arkansas Centennial Commission and the Arkansas History Commission during 1937 and 1938. It commemorates the site of Izard County’s original courthouse.

The AHPP, an agency of the Arkansas Heritage Foundation, oversees the preservation and promotion of historic sites across the state. The foundation, established in 1974, operates as part of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage, and Tourism.

The National Register of Historic Places is the federal government’s official list of districts, sites, structures, and objects deemed historically significant for preservation efforts. Recognition on this list often helps ensure the protection and promotion of these properties for future generations.
