The Mountain View Yellowjackets moved closer to a 3A state playoff berth with a 20-8 victory over the Salem Greyhounds in a 3A-2 conference game Friday night in Mountain View.

The first quarter saw both teams locked in a defensive battle, with neither gaining ground in field position. The game’s momentum shifted just before halftime. With 1:02 left in the second quarter, Mountain View’s George Rector intercepted a pass from Salem quarterback Peyton Chambers and returned it 47 yards for the game’s first touchdown. A successful extra-point kick gave the Yellowjackets a 7-0 advantage heading into halftime.

The Yellowjackets extended their lead early in the third quarter. After Kannon Clauer sacked Chambers to force a Salem punt, a series of runs by Micah Moore and a 23-yard scramble by Mountain View quarterback Noah Davis set up a five-yard touchdown pass from Davis to Trent Hudspeth. Another extra-point kick brought the score to 14-0.

Salem answered later in the third quarter with an 83-yard touchdown pass from Chambers to Connor Muir. Aiden Province’s two-point conversion trimmed Mountain View’s lead to 14-8 with 25.6 seconds remaining in the period.

Mountain View sealed the game on its first drive of the fourth quarter. Davis connected with Rector for a 25-yard touchdown, pushing the score to 20-8 after a failed two-point conversion. Salem attempted to rally as Chambers completed a 24-yard pass to Muir, but a third-down sack by Miles McCentire resulted in a 10-yard loss and forced the Greyhounds to punt.

The Yellowjackets then ran down the clock with a 10-play drive, highlighted by Moore’s seven carries and three critical first downs, allowing Mountain View to enter the victory formation and secure the win.

In other 3A-2 conference action, the Melbourne Bearkatz stayed in the race for a league title with a 41-12 win over the Yellville-Summit Panthers. Quitman defeated Riverview 42-7, and Newport blanked Marshall 64-0.
