Sharp County residents are being warned of a new phone scam in which callers claim to represent the circuit clerk’s office, according to Sheriff Shane Russell.
The scammers are reportedly telling residents there is a problem with their voter identification and are requesting personal information to resolve the issue, the sheriff said in a statement released Friday.
Sheriff Russell emphasized that no one from the circuit clerk’s office — or any local government agency — will ever call residents to ask for money or personal information.
“This is yet another attempt by scammers to steal identities,” Russell said. He urged residents to exercise caution and share the warning with neighbors who might not use social media or otherwise be aware of the scheme.
Anyone who believes they have been contacted by the scammers or who has already provided personal information should report the incident to local law enforcement immediately.
