The Baxter County Sheriff’s Department has announced its participation in National Drug Take Back Day this Saturday, providing a local drop-off site for residents to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., medications can be dropped off at the Tractor Supply parking lot located at 1026 Highway 62 East in Mountain Home. Sheriff John Montgomery emphasized that the event is 'no questions asked,' allowing participants to dispose of medications confidentially and responsibly.

The program is part of a broader initiative occurring nationwide on October 28, aiming to prevent medication misuse, accidental poisoning, and environmental damage from improper drug disposal. Alongside Baxter County, other area law enforcement agencies participating include the Izard County Sheriff’s Office, the Cherokee Village Police Department, the City of Hollister, and the Howell County Sheriff’s Department. Each agency will have its own designated drop-off points.

Sheriff Montgomery underscored the importance of properly disposing of medications, noting potential dangers associated with keeping expired or unused drugs in the home. By participating in this initiative, he said, residents contribute to the safety of their homes and community.

After the medications are collected, they are turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for secure and environmentally safe disposal. Similar events in Baxter County have historically resulted in the collection of significant amounts of unwanted medications.

For those unable to attend Saturday's drop-off event in Mountain Home, additional drug disposal sites can be located using the DEA’s online locator tool.
