JONESBORO, Ark. — Arkansas State University football player Hunter Joseph Summers, 21, has been arrested on suspicion of third-degree domestic battering following an alleged domestic disturbance on campus. Summers, a wide receiver for the Red Wolves, was taken into custody Wednesday by university police.

According to a University Police Department incident report, officers were called to the 1100 block of University Loop East at around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Cpl. Robert Kary responded to the scene after receiving a report of an altercation.

The victim told police the incident began while she and Summers were in bed, during which she reacted to a social media post by one of Summers’ former teammates with a fire emoji. This reportedly led to an argument, with Summers allegedly becoming upset, calling her slurs, and asking if she thought it was “f---ing funny.”

The report alleges the situation escalated when Summers repeatedly slammed the victim’s phone to the ground, cracking it, before grabbing her by the neck and pushing her against a wall, causing red marks on her back. The victim also claimed Summers threatened to break her belongings, including her school laptop and eyeglasses, and to punch out her window.

A witness in the residence at the time told police they heard shouting, including the victim saying, "I’m sorry," followed by the sound of something hitting the floor. They also heard the victim instruct Summers to leave the room.

Cpl. Kary located Summers at the university’s Football Operations Center later that day. After being read his Miranda rights, Summers reportedly admitted to damaging the victim’s phone but denied physically assaulting her. He was taken into custody and booked into the Craighead County Detention Center, where he awaits a Nov. 24 appearance in district court.

As per the incident report, the victim was provided resources under Laura’s Law, which offers information and support for individuals experiencing domestic violence. She reportedly expressed fear for her safety following the arrest.

No further comments or statements regarding Summers’ status with the football program were immediately available. The investigation remains ongoing.
