JONESBORO, Ark. — A report of shots heard on Mary Jane Drive led to a precautionary lockdown at Nettleton STEAM School on Tuesday afternoon, according to Jonesboro police officials.

Officers responded to the report at 1:11 p.m. on October 20 and remained in the area for investigation over an hour later. By 2:19 p.m., law enforcement was still on the scene, police spokeswoman Sally Smith said.

Smith reported that two juveniles were taken into custody in connection with the incident. However, no weapons were found on the juveniles, and officers had not recovered a firearm during their search as of the latest update. Authorities were also seeking a third person related to the investigation, Smith added.

"There were no confirmed shots fired," Smith said, noting that police had not established whether any gunshots occurred or a weapon was present.

Due to the proximity of the report to Nettleton STEAM School, officers requested the school implement a lockdown as a precautionary measure. The lockdown was issued out of an abundance of caution for student and staff safety, Smith explained.

In a separate incident the same day, police investigated another report of shots fired, which was later determined to be caused by an orange truck that backfired, Smith said.

The investigation into the Mary Jane Drive report is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the validity of the initial call and locate the third individual.
