BATESVILLE, Ark. — The Independence County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a scam involving phone calls that falsely claim the recipient has missed federal jury duty and must pay a fine over the phone.

According to the sheriff’s office, the callers often impersonate law enforcement by using the name of a real officer and providing what sounds like an official badge number. Victims may also be directed to report to the sheriff’s office or purchase transferable digital currencies to resolve the issue.

Authorities stress that neither the sheriff’s office nor any federal agency will call individuals to resolve warrants or request payment over the phone. Legitimate warrant notifications are sent via mail.

The sheriff’s department advises anyone receiving such calls to hang up, block the number, and report it if possible. Under no circumstances should recipients comply with the caller's instructions, as these scams are solely intended to steal money.

Reports of scam calls can be made to the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office at 800-482-8982 or by emailing consumer@arkansasag.gov. Residents who have already lost money to a scam can file an official complaint through the Arkansas Consumer Complaint Portal at portal.arkansas.gov/service/ar-consumer-complaint-form/.

The department is urging residents to share this warning with family and friends. Those with concerns or questions about potential scams can contact the Independence County Sheriff’s Department directly at 870-793-8838.
