Three more employees of the Greene County Detention Center have been fired in connection with the death of 18-year-old Atiyanna Willis, Sheriff Brad Snyder announced. This brings the total number of terminations to 12 since Willis’s death after a medical emergency while in custody on Sept. 22.
In a video statement shared on social media, Snyder explained the firings followed the continuation of an internal investigation. "Unfortunately, as our internal investigation continued, we found three more detention center employees that violated department policy and as such were terminated," Snyder said on Oct. 19.
Nine employees were previously fired on Oct. 1, about a week after the incident occurred. At that time, Snyder expressed anger and disappointment after reviewing video and documentation related to Willis’s detainment.
"Every person in our custody deserves to be checked on, cared for, and treated with dignity," Snyder said in an earlier statement. "That’s the standard that I set here in this jail."
Following the incident, Snyder ordered all detention center staff to undergo immediate retraining on how to monitor inmates and recognize medical emergencies. He noted that most of the jail’s employees had completed this training as of Oct. 19.
Snyder has not disclosed details about the Arkansas State Police investigation into Willis’s death or the pending results of an autopsy by the Arkansas State Crime Lab. No accusations of criminal wrongdoing have been made against the fired employees, and Snyder has not indicated whether any charges would be filed.
"Our own internal review is continuing, too. If we find something that needs to change, we’re going to change it," Snyder said. "Most of the men and women who work in our jail do a hard job, and they do it very well. But when someone in our custody needs help, we have to answer. Every time."
The 18-year-old Willis died on Sept. 22 after experiencing a medical emergency while in custody. Her case has drawn significant attention and prompted continuing reviews of detention policies and staff procedures at the jail.
The Arkansas State Police investigation remains ongoing, with no additional updates as of Oct. 19.
