A former Springdale police officer has been decertified following an investigation into his use of a school-issued laptop for accessing websites with explicit material while assigned as a school resource officer.

The Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training voted unanimously on Oct. 13 to revoke the law enforcement certification of Christopher Schmeckenbecher, who had worked for the Springdale Police Department since June 2019. The decision followed an inquiry initiated earlier this year.

According to documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, concerns arose on April 15, 2025, when the Springdale Public Schools' director of technology alerted local police to suspicious website activity on the laptop assigned to Schmeckenbecher. Investigators determined that a personal email account had been logged into the device instead of the required school district-issued account.

The investigation uncovered that the laptop had accessed a website hosting explicit short stories, some of which contained content warnings for sensitive themes such as rape and underage sexual content. Browser records showed the use of incognito mode for some of the browsing.

A digital forensic report included in the case documents confirmed no evidence of child sexual abuse material on the laptop.

Schmeckenbecher resigned from the force on April 18, 2025, three days after the school district flagged the issue. On April 22, Springdale Police Chief Derek Wright formally recommended that Schmeckenbecher's law enforcement certification be revoked. His decertification concludes the commission's review.

Officials have not indicated Schmeckenbecher faces criminal charges in connection with the laptop investigation.
