The Maynard Volunteer Fire Department will receive two Assistance to Firefighters Grants through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to upgrade its equipment and support firefighter health programs.

One of the grants, valued at $150,000, will enable the department to purchase a new brush truck, bolstering its firefighting capabilities and response to wildfires. The second grant will replace 15 outdated helmets and fund annual physical exams, cancer screenings, and mental health counseling for the department’s first responders.

FEMA will cover 95% of the combined cost of both grants, requiring a local match of $15,825.01 to be funded by the city. The Maynard City Council met earlier this week and voted to approve the required funding.

These grants aim to enhance the department’s safety measures and ensure the health and readiness of its volunteers, according to local officials. The investment reflects a commitment to supporting Maynard's first responders as they serve the community.
