Arkansas snapped a 14-game SEC football losing streak Saturday night with a 31-21 victory over Vanderbilt at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville. It marked the Razorbacks’ first league win under head coach Ryan Silverfield and their first conference victory since November 2, 2024.
The matchup featured the SEC’s final two winless teams in conference play this season. Arkansas (3-4, 1-3 SEC) overcame multiple tight games during the streak, which began nearly two years ago with a 63-31 loss to Ole Miss. Seven of those defeats were decided by one possession.
"We always believed," Silverfield said during his postgame interview on ESPN2. "Even when we took tough losses earlier this season, the guys kept showing up and working. I couldn’t be prouder of their resiliency—this is the foundation we’re building here in Arkansas."
The Razorbacks clinched the game late, capitalizing on a crucial turnover by Vanderbilt (3-4, 0-4 SEC). Freshman quarterback Jared Curtis’s ill-advised shovel pass was intercepted by Arkansas defensive back Miguel Mitchell at the Razorbacks’ 29-yard line with 5:38 left in the fourth quarter. Arkansas then drained over three minutes off the clock during a drive that ended with a 39-yard field goal by Max Gilbert, extending their lead to 31-21 with 22 seconds remaining.
Clutch plays on Arkansas’ final possession sealed the win, including a third-and-10 conversion on a 31-yard underthrown catch by Jamari Hawkins.
Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea, whose team has now lost four straight SEC games this year, expressed disappointment over the turnovers and penalties that plagued the Commodores’ performance.
The game was tightly contested early. Vanderbilt opened the scoring with a Sedrick Alexander 4-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. Arkansas tied the score in the second when Joker Johnson picked off Curtis and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown, the Razorbacks’ first defensive score this season. Vanderbilt immediately responded with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Curtis to Junior Sherrill.
However, Arkansas leveled the game again before halftime, with sophomore running back Damien Settles capping off a nine-play drive with an 11-yard touchdown run just 38 seconds before the break.
Quarterback KJ Jackson gave Arkansas its first lead early in the third quarter on an 8-yard keeper to complete a 75-yard drive. While the Razorbacks missed a chance to extend their lead on a missed 51-yard field goal by Gilbert, Vanderbilt tied the game minutes later with a 3-yard rushing touchdown. Settles regained the lead for Arkansas in the closing moments of the third quarter with another 3-yard rushing score.
Arkansas finished the game with 438 yards of total offense, including a season-high 187 rushing yards. Jackson led the effort on the ground with 58 rushing yards, in addition to completing 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards. Antonio Jordan shined as Jackson’s primary target, tallying five catches for 74 yards.
Vanderbilt’s Curtis showcased moments of promise but struggled with turnovers. The true freshman passed for 274 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. His performance was highlighted by a 45-yard reception by tight end Maurice Veney earlier in the third quarter.
Arkansas improved to 5-0 all-time in games played at Vanderbilt, with their last road contest against the Commodores dating back to 2011.
Now tied with South Carolina and Texas A&M at the bottom of the SEC standings, the Razorbacks will head into their bye week before hosting Missouri on October 31. The SEC will finalize kickoff times and TV broadcasts for Week 9 on Monday.
