The Calico Rock Pirates and Lady Pirates basketball teams are preparing for an exciting 2026-27 season, with both squads aiming to make a mark in conference play.

Boys’ basketball head coach Tanner Hoskins, now in his fourth year at Calico Rock, says the Pirates have one of the tallest teams he’s coached during his 12-year career. Last season, the Pirates built an impressive record of 27-8, capturing both the conference and district championships. Their season culminated with a trip to the regional tournament, and this year, Hoskins says the team’s goal is to advance to the state tournament.

Leading the Pirates on the court is senior Daytona Sherrill, alongside a deep junior class that includes Eli Thornton, Franky Sanders, Gage Sanders, Joe McDole, Lucas Mendez, Mason Brickell, and Peyton Burkhart. The team also features several sophomore players, including Carter Wilson, Colton Branscum, Paul Arnold, Payton Franks, and Trenton Bonds.

On the girls’ side, Lady Pirates head coach Jason Hughes is entering his second season with the program, following a long career coaching in Viola. Last year, the Lady Pirates finished 15-16, earning fifth place in their conference and a spot in the district tournament. Hughes graduated three seniors from that roster but returns an All-State player, giving the team a strong foundation for the upcoming year. Hughes believes the Lady Pirates have the potential to contend for a top spot in the conference if they can consistently win key matchups.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will tip off their seasons at the Bobby D. Hulse Classic in Norfork with opening games against Kingston. Expectations are high for both teams as they work toward their respective season goals.
