The Arkansas State Red Wolves will travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, this Saturday to take on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in a critical Sun Belt Conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at M.M. Roberts Stadium, also known as "The Rock."

Under head coach Butch Jones, the Red Wolves enter the game looking to regain momentum in a season that has already seen significant highs and lows. The team started their 2026 campaign with a disappointing 42–24 loss to Memphis but found redemption in Week 2 with a dominant 52–7 victory over FCS opponent West Georgia. Following a tough loss to TCU in Week 3, the Red Wolves claimed a narrow win against Kennesaw State before dropping back-to-back Sun Belt games to Louisiana and South Alabama.

Arkansas State’s offense has been heavily reliant on quarterback Trey Owens, who has thrown for 1,461 yards and nine touchdowns this season. While Owens has showcased his arm, he has also been sacked nine times and thrown six interceptions through six games. The Red Wolves have accumulated 797 rushing yards as a team, but Owens remains the focal point of their attack. His dual-threat capability includes 149 rushing yards and two touchdowns, though protecting him in the pocket has been an ongoing challenge for Arkansas State.

Southern Mississippi, led by head coach Blake Anderson, is also in search of a victory after four consecutive losses, including a 55–34 defeat to Troy last week. Anderson, who previously coached at Arkansas State from 2014 to 2020, has significant ties to the Red Wolves. During his tenure in Jonesboro, Anderson led the team to two Sun Belt titles and compiled a 51–37 overall record. Saturday’s contest will mark the first time he faces his former team.

The Golden Eagles’ signal caller, Landry Lyddy, has been one of the bright spots for Southern Miss despite a struggling offensive line. Lyddy has thrown for 824 yards, six touchdowns, and only two interceptions but has been sacked nine times, losing 55 yards. Protecting Lyddy will be essential for Southern Miss to avoid falling into an early deficit—a pattern they’ve endured in every game this season, even in their lone win against Alcorn State in Week 1.

Defensively, Southern Mississippi’s “Nasty Bunch” has struggled in pass coverage, allowing opposing quarterbacks to exploit their secondary. Thus far, the unit has recorded seven pass deflections, five interceptions, and three forced fumbles. To contain Owens and the aerial attack of Arkansas State, the Golden Eagles’ defense will need to improve significantly on Saturday.

The game also carries additional intrigue as running back Kenyon Clay, a former Southern Mississippi player, now suits up for Arkansas State. Clay transferred after the 2024 season and has been productive in Jonesboro, nearly matching his numbers from his time with the Golden Eagles. This season, he has tallied 637 rushing yards, five rushing touchdowns, 313 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns for the Red Wolves.

Both teams face mounting pressure to turn their seasons around, as each looks to fix key issues on both sides of the ball. For Arkansas State, better protection for Owens and minimizing costly turnovers could be the deciding factors. For Southern Mississippi, maintaining a stronger defensive front and giving Lyddy time in the pocket may determine whether they can secure their first win since early September.

Fans attending or tuning in will witness two programs desperate to capitalize on a midseason opportunity to shift their trajectories. Saturday night's Sun Belt clash is expected to deliver competitive action from start to finish.
