JONESBORO, Ark. — A crowd of around 120 community members, state officials, and educational leaders gathered Friday morning near the Judd Hill Farmers Market to celebrate the ongoing construction of the Career Readiness Education and Skills Training (CREST) center. Braving light rain and a chilly autumn morning, attendees marked what many see as a significant step forward for workforce development in Northeast Arkansas.
Speaking to those assembled, Craighead County Judge Marvin Day emphasized CREST's mission to serve individuals needing advanced training beyond high school but short of a full college degree. The center is a collaborative initiative between Arkansas State University, ASU-Newport, and Arkansas Northeastern College, designed to address local industry needs.
“This building is really here to find a way to give people an opportunity to get where they want to be,” Day explained. “Education is education, you know? High school is not enough. You have to find ways to find what you love and get the skills that you need for that.”
Organizers said CREST is aligned with the region's economic landscape, preparing workers for careers in sectors such as steel technology, advanced manufacturing, engineering technology, and food sciences. With Northeast Arkansas undergoing continued industrial growth, particularly in the steel and manufacturing industries, the center aims to equip graduates to enter the workforce immediately after completing their training.
“This is a great opportunity to grow into the steel industry, grow into the manufacturing industry,” Judge Day added.
Nine speakers, including state leaders and members of the Arkansas State University board, addressed the importance of workforce development programs like CREST in fostering both personal and regional success. The parking lot, filled with spectators from across the community, reflected widespread support for the project.
CREST promises to create a vital connection between education and employment in Northeast Arkansas, offering accessible training that meets the demands of a rapidly expanding local economy.
The project represents a shared vision to bolster workforce readiness across the region and provide new opportunities for residents seeking career advancement through specialized education.
