The annual Bobby D. Hulse Classic, honoring the late educator and coach, begins Monday evening at Norfork High School, bringing together basketball teams from across the region to compete on the court he cherished.

Bobby D. Hulse, remembered for his dedication, kindness, and professionalism, left a lasting impact on education and athletics in the Twin Lakes area. After graduating from Henderson State University, Hulse launched his teaching and coaching career at Hermitage in 1966. He joined Norfork High School in 1990, where he served as principal, elementary principal, athletic director, and coach, mentoring countless students and athletes over his 24-year career.

The classic named in his honor doubles as the basketball season opener for several area schools. Calico Rock boys coach Tanner Hoskins remarked on what a privilege it is to participate in an event that celebrates Hulse’s legacy, while Cotter boys coach Kyle Gammill, a former participant in the tournament, reflected on its importance to the basketball community.

The five-day event kicks off with Monday’s games between the Calico Rock Lady Pirates and Kingston, followed by the Calico Rock boys taking on Kingston. Later Monday, Alpena’s girls face Rural Special, with the Alpena boys also playing Rural Special.

Games continue Friday, October 20, when Jasper’s girls open against Greers Ferry Westside, followed by the Jasper boys taking on Riverside. Additional matchups include the Bergman Lady Panthers playing Norfork and Cotter’s boys facing the Timbo Tigers.

Saturday, October 21, features Timbo’s girls against Tuckerman and Bergman’s boys competing with Bay. The Norfork Panthers will take to the court against Bergman's junior varsity team.

On Sunday, October 22, Bay’s boys challenge Cotter, while Greers Ferry Westside’s girls meet Sloan-Hendrix, followed by their boys facing Norfork.

The tournament concludes Monday, October 23, with Tuckerman’s boys and girls teams closing the event against Norfork’s Lady Panthers and Panthers, respectively.

The Bobby D. Hulse Classic not only launches the basketball season but also keeps alive the memory of a man who gave so much to the local school community.
