OSCEOLA, Ark.—A young man’s long journey from homelessness to stability has been met with compassion from residents of Osceola and surrounding areas.
Alexander McClain, 21, has been homeless since the age of 14, traveling on foot through Texas, Mississippi, and Tennessee before arriving in northeast Arkansas. As he walked, McClain hauled a cart with his belongings and fishing poles, sometimes receiving brief rides but largely making the journey on foot.
“Them rides really do help, because that heat is something else,” McClain said.
After reaching Osceola, McClain was spotted by Bobby Clifton and his wife as he pulled his cart. The Cliftons, who live in nearby Keiser, felt moved to act.
“The Lord laid it on my heart to stop and talk with him,” Clifton said.
Clifton initially bought McClain a meal but wanted to do more. He contacted a friend, Matt, who owns Brigs Automotive, a local repair shop in Osceola. Together, they found a way to offer McClain shelter and support.
“Matt agreed to let him stay here, and he’s been here ever since,” Clifton said.
Over the last several weeks, McClain has stayed in a pair of tents set up behind the shop. In return, he helps with tasks such as picking up trash, clearing sharp debris from the shop’s gravel access road, and repairing fence panels.
“I think of it as like rent,” McClain said. “It was in their hearts to help, and I’m really grateful for that.”
Community members have also rallied around McClain, bringing him hot meals and clothing. Clifton says their generosity stems from a shared sense of humanity.
“What if that was my kid?” Clifton asked. “I’d want somebody to help him too. That’s the way I look at helping people.”
McClain’s journey and the community’s kindness highlight the power of compassion and support in addressing homelessness, one small step at a time.
