JONESBORO, Ark. — The family of longtime Arkansas State University educator Ronald Wade Towery has pledged $30,000 to establish an endowed scholarship for aspiring teachers, with a focus on supporting students managing work and family responsibilities alongside their studies.

Pam Towery, his wife, and Kim Towery Childers, his daughter, created the Ron Towery Family Scholarship through the Arkansas State University System Foundation following his passing in May 2025, according to an announcement from the university.

Towery, affectionately known as “Dr. T,” devoted 36 years of his career to A-State’s College of Education and Behavioral Science, retiring in 2024 after more than five decades in education. His dedication to mentoring and curriculum development left a significant mark on the university and the students he served.

The scholarship is aimed at students pursuing degrees in mid-level education, with preference given to nontraditional students, such as those aged 25 or older, single parents, or individuals working at least 20 hours per week while completing their degrees. Eligible recipients must maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA and demonstrate progress toward admission into the Teacher Education Program. The scholarship is renewable through the student’s residency year, provided program requirements continue to be met.

“Ron devoted his life to education and believed deeply in the potential of every student,” Pam Towery stated in the announcement. “Creating this scholarship is a way for our family to honor his legacy while helping future teachers pursue their dreams and make a difference in the lives of others.”

The scholarship is intended to alleviate financial pressures for students juggling their studies with demanding personal responsibilities.

“One of the many things we admired about Dad was his genuine concern for students and their success,” Childers shared in the university’s release. “He spent his career encouraging future teachers and helping them navigate challenges. We hope this scholarship continues that work for years to come.”

The endowed scholarship will provide annual financial support, distributed through earnings generated by the fund, under the direction of the College of Education and Behavioral Science Scholarship Committee.
