Authorities in Izard County are investigating multiple reports of campaign signs being taken from properties, according to Sheriff Charley Melton.
Sheriff Melton explained that the unauthorized removal of campaign signs may be classified as theft of property. If the value of the sign is $1,000 or less, theft of property is considered a Class A misdemeanor.
Additionally, any act of damaging or destroying someone else’s campaign sign could constitute criminal mischief in the first degree. As with theft, if the damage amounts to $1,000 or less, it also qualifies as a Class A misdemeanor.
Melton further noted that individuals who purposely enter or remain unlawfully on someone else’s property might face criminal trespass charges. Criminal trespass is categorized as a Class A misdemeanor in some cases or as a Class B misdemeanor in others, depending on the circumstances.
The sheriff is urging residents to report any instances of campaign sign theft, vandalism, or trespassing to their nearest law enforcement agency.
Campaign season in Arkansas often sees increased reports of sign-related disputes. Law enforcement officials remind citizens to respect private property and campaign materials, as tampering with them is not only illegal but also undermines the democratic process.
