A new scholarship at Arkansas State University will honor the legacy of Dr. Ronald Wade Towery, a highly respected educator whose decades-long career shaped generations of teachers across Arkansas.

The Ron Towery Family Scholarship was established by his wife, Pam Towery, and daughter, Kim Towery Childers, following his passing in May 2025. The family has committed $30,000 to endow the scholarship through the Arkansas State University System Foundation. It will support students in the College of Education and Behavioral Science (CoEBS), reflecting Dr. Towery’s passion for helping others achieve their educational goals.

Dr. Towery, who retired in 2024 after 36 years at A-State, served as a department chair, faculty mentor, and curriculum developer in the CoEBS. He was widely respected for his dedication to teacher education and public schools. Over the course of a 50-year career in education, including his decades at A-State, he influenced countless educators whose work continues to impact students across Arkansas and beyond.

The scholarship will provide financial assistance to students majoring in mid-level education, with a preference for non-traditional students. Eligible recipients may include those aged 25 or older, single parents, or individuals who work at least 20 hours per week while pursuing their degree. Award recipients must maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA and demonstrate progress toward admission to A-State’s Teacher Education Program. Scholarships may be renewed through the recipient’s residency year, contingent on meeting academic and program requirements.

“Ron devoted his life to education and believed deeply in the potential of every student,” Pam Towery said. “Creating this scholarship is a way for our family to honor his legacy while helping future teachers pursue their dreams and make a difference in the lives of others.”

The family designed the scholarship to ease financial burdens for students who often balance coursework with work, family, and other responsibilities.

“One of the many things we admired about Dad was his genuine concern for students and their success,” said Kim Towery Childers. “He spent his career encouraging future teachers and helping them navigate challenges. We hope this scholarship continues that work for years to come.”

The Ron Towery Family Scholarship will be administered by the College of Education and Behavioral Science Scholarship Committee. Annual awards will be funded through earnings generated by the endowment.
