A 31-year-old man was arrested after leading Jonesboro police on a high-speed chase that ended with officers deploying a K-9 unit to locate him inside his apartment.

According to court records, an officer attempted to stop a red passenger car for speeding and failing to use turn signals near the intersection of Caraway Road and Fox Meadow Lane on Friday, Oct. 8. When the officer activated emergency lights, the vehicle initially stopped but then reversed toward the patrol car, prompting evasive maneuvers.

The driver, later identified as Markell Ellis, allegedly began shouting before speeding away. As a second officer approached the scene, Ellis reportedly drove around the second patrol car, forcing the officer to retreat to avoid being struck. During the encounter, the passenger in Ellis’ vehicle jumped from the moving car.

Officers pursued Ellis north on Caraway Road into the Links apartment complex, where he shut off his headlights and continued to evade police. Authorities later located his vehicle, and Ellis fled on foot into his apartment.

After verifying Ellis had entered the building, officers gained access and instructed him to exit a bedroom, but he allegedly refused. As a result, a K-9 unit was deployed. The dog located Ellis in the apartment, biting him until officers were able to take him into custody.

Craighead County District Court Judge David Boling found probable cause to charge Ellis with a range of offenses, including felony fleeing, aggravated assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest.

Ellis remains in custody on a $150,000 cash or surety bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 23.
